Care Sheet
All of our chillies are edible. The majority also have the advantage of looking good – hence our company name ‘Edible Ornamentals’.
Chillies can be eaten at any stage, even immature, when they would be green, purple or cream. Eventually, most chillies will ripen to red.
The heat of each chilli can vary on the same plant. Many factors can influence the heat of the chilli, such as light intensity, the watering regime, time of day, etc. The heat comes from capsaicin, which is concentrated in the white membrane and veins located close to the stem. Removing the veins and seeds can reduce the level of heat. If you do taste too much heat, do not drink water; the capsaicin oil will be disbursed around your mouth. It is best to drink milk or eat bread to absorb the oil.
Fresh chillies will keep for up to two weeks in the refrigerator or they can be frozen. Bring the chillies to room temperature before using as they will taste better.
Feed the plant when required. If leaves turn yellow, water with Miracle-Gro. If you want more fruits, Tomorite is excellent.
Chillies cannot tolerate the frost. During the colder months your chilli plants will require a min. temperature of 7C. Start feeding the chilli plant in March. Pick the chillies often and mist the plant to increase the yield. Misting may also help keep whitefly at bay! Harvest all fruits before winter. During the colder months, do not wet the foliage and water only in the mornings.
Chilli plants do well outdoors during the summer months and are equally happy indoors. They are extremely versatile and stylish plants.
ENJOY!
